Sustainable Development Goals

The UN General Assembly, at its Sustainable Development Summit held from 25-27 September 2015, adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, a result of lengthy negotiations over the past few years. These are intended as a “plan of action for people, planet and prosperity”. The 17 goals cover all aspects of sustainable development – achieving economic prosperity, social welfare and environmental sustainability together, rather than a narrow focus on economic growth.

The SDGs provide a broader frame around the Aichi Biodiversity Targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which themselves address the broader issues of human welfare and sustainability, yet with a focus on biodiversity and conserving nature.

As a research and development organization focused on East African issues, CORDIO will undertake to frame its activities in light of the SDGs, to contribute to sustainable management and use of marine resources, and protecting the unique marine environments of our region.

SDG 14, focused on oceans, and Aichi Targets 6, 10 and 11, on fisheries, climate-vulnerable ecosystems and protected areas, provide an overarching mandate for our work.
