Coral reef monitoring in the Western Indian Ocean has been undertaken under the umbrella of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) and the Nairobi Convention’s Coral Reef Task Force, since the late 1990s. Traditionally, the southwest Indian Ocean islands (SWIO node) and the mainland East Africa (EA) nodes of the GCRMN have operated independently, but these are now being integrated more effectively in a regional reporting mechanisms for 2015-16.
Past GCRMN reporting that included, or focused on the WIO are contained in the window below. A new regional report for 2017 has just been published and can be viewed here.
This effort is supported through projects in the Marine Programme of the Indian Ocean Commission – first the ISLANDS project (2011-14) and now the Biodiversity project (2015-2017). For information on specific support from these projects please go to these pages.
