In 2017, CORDIO became more strongly engaged in the global effort to strengthen the GCRMN to ensure more stable monitoring, data acquisition and reporting by members of the GCRMN regional and national monitoring networks. Led by the International Coral Reef Initiative, this is being done applying standards developed by the Global Ocean Observing System and GEOBONS through its Biology and Ecosystems Panel, and the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network of GEOBON.
Key activities/outputs that contributed to global initiatives
- GOOS/GCRMN Webinar
given on 7 March by David Obura on strengthening global coral reef monitoring and reporting to meet global conservation and development needs
GOOS/GCRMN workshop in Dar es Salaam, 3-4 November 2017, after the WIOMSA Symposium, to discuss the GCRMN implementation plan and the hard-coral cover Essential Ocean Variable.
CORDIO entered into a consultancy with UN Environment to develop the GCRMN Implementation and Governance Plan.
Preparation of multiple manuscripts documenting best practice and standards in ocean observing systems. Completed in late 2017, an overarching paper by the GOOS BioEco Panel (Miloslavich et al.) on the Essential Ocean Variables, and to be followed in 2018 by several additional manuscripts on different elements.
