Overview

Coastal Oceans Research and Development – Indian Ocean (CORDIO) East Africa is a research-based marine conservation organisation specializing in the generation of knowledge to find solutions to the problems facing coastal and marine environments and the people dependent on them.

Our work is largely guided by CORDIO’s strategic plan 2016-2020 that seeks to address the SDG goal No.14 through five key strategic objectives. The focus is on coral reefs and adjacent marine ecosystems with the aim of sustaining healthy and productive ecosystem function and conserving biodiversity with reference to a range of topics such as coral reef resilience, artisanal fisheries, climate change, community based approach to the management of ecosystems and conservation, equally address problems interlinked in the WIO region.

In 2017, CORDIO had 16 active projects (five of which were new and 11 existing) funded by twelve donors with a total of US$418,000.

Project duration ranged from six months to five years with a topic range and types of the projects focused on three key thematic areas i.e. marine biodiversity, marine habitats and ecosystems as well as data and data repositories. The projects were implemented in four countries namely Djibouti, Seychelles, Mozambique and Kenya.

The solutions created in past year have continued to support the alleviation, reduction and prevention of the aforementioned issues hence starting the journey towards attaining sustainable management goals, successful implementation of policies at the local, national and regional levels.

This second edition of the annual report will outline the main activities and outputs undertaken by CORDIO in the period from January to December 2017, with reference to the organisation’s strategic plan and objectives as a guide.

The five strategic objectives are:

1) To contribute scientific knowledge on coastal and ocean ecosystems in the context of climate change: to understand their vulnerabilities and resilience

2) To integrate science, practice and governance at local, national and regional levels

3) To build the capacity of communities to co-manage their resources and to decrease their vulnerability

4) To contribute to improved regional decision making through strengthened partnerships that implement solutions for managing marine and coastal systems sustainably

5) To strengthen CORDIO’s internal capacity to effectively and efficiently implement our strategic plan.
