Nairobi Convention – COP7, 2012

Nairobi+Convention+Logob-smallThe Seventh Conference of Parties of the Nairobi Convention was held from 10-14 December 2012, at the Avenida Hotel in Maputo, Mozambique.


The UNEP Nairobi Convention Secretariat, in close collaboration with the host and Chair of the Bureau for the Nairobi Convention, the Government of Mozambique, Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), BirdLife International, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and CORDIO East Africa organized COP7, under the theme “Partnering for a Healthy Western Indian Ocean”.


CORDIO presented two initiatives in the Science-Policy workshop of the COP, with one submitted as a policy paper for a decision at the COP. These were:

Potential marine World Heritage sites in the Western Indian Ocean


Ocean Health Index for the Western Indian Ocean.

In addition, CORDIO’s research findings on the biodiversity of coral reefs in the western Indian Ocean is featuring in proposals for a Northern Mozambique Channel initiative, which was championed at COP7 by WWF.
